Coldcut (UK) presents Journeys by VJ
Audiovisual performance
Not only have Coldcut (Ninja Tune) been knocking around the globe as producers and DJs on the electronic music circuit for 20 years already, they also pioneered video performance as a new genre. These founding members of the VJ-group Hex (and later also of the VJamm Allstars) are open to multimedia experiments. They developed VJamm, a software that enables video material to be processed live, and presented it to the public in 1997. The art of DJ-ing was transferred to VJ-ing. Significantly, Coldcut also fall back on sampling techniques when it comes to the images they use, scouring the entertainment industry’s archives, for example. Found footage from ads, TV, film or the sciences is processed, interpreted and combined with music to make a new audiovisual entity. With Journeys by VJ Coldcut are celebrating their twentieth birthday. At Shift, Matt Black together with Raj Pannu will be showing where the audiovisual trip is heading.
